The Northern Turf Pro Advantage

A golf course is a true collection of diverse, complex challenges that require unique solutions to provide quality conditions on a daily basis.  The golf course superintendent will wear multiple hats to achieve positive results in conquering each of these challenges.  The superintendent will be a nurserymen when he plants those new trees on the sixth hole or that new landscape bed at the fifteenth tee, a contractor when he rebuilds the fourth tee or fixes those bunkers on the eighteenth hole, a spray tech when the weeds and insects come a calling, a sod farmer when he works through spring transition problems or repairs those traffic areas at the end of a long season, and a superintendent to provide the quality daily conditioning the members and guests expect each time they come to play.  The battles are difficult since our fight is often won or lost with the intervention of an uncontrollable entity, Mother Nature herself.

While these are only a short list of the responsibilities a superintendent has to be on any given day, week, month or year, he or she must always be a Steward of the Environment.  They must complete all their tasks using a finite amount of water even though you haven’t seen rain for two months, you must maintain quality turf even though state and federal agencies say that you can’t use this or that chemical anymore because it is dangerous, and lets not forget those groups who say that all the chemicals and fertilizers we use are damaging our environment.  Is there actually a solution to help achieve greater turf and plant conditions while pleasing all these outside influences?  The answer is yes.

Original Turf Pro will provide many solutions you are looking for.  This natural, organic and non-toxic product is the environmental alternative that is an effective solution to anything that grows on your golf course.  The true benefit is that it will also save time and money while producing a high quality product.

Being in the golf course industry for 22 years, I have fought the good fight and witnessed the changes in the tools we have to wage these wars.  I am very old school and traditional when it comes to the maintenance of my facilities and have seen or tried most products that make similar claims.  Over a year ago I was introduced to this product and was asked to try it, as many of you will be and the results surprised me.

Over the last few years, Original Turf Pro has trailed and tested its product under a variety of uses and have prepared the following programs for the following areas: greens, tees, fairways, roughs and other areas, construction or renovation and landscape.  The programs have provided improved turf, more playable conditions and quicker recovery, establishment or completion of projects.  Though there is an expense associated with the use of the product, the savings in time, the higher quality turf conditions and the savings in fertilizer and pesticides has enabled most, if not all facilities using the product, to reduce costs in its operating budget.

The Northern Turf Pro Advantage

Greens

Many a career has been affected by the quality of our putting surfaces.  Knowing that a golfer will spend nearly 50% of his or her round on or around the green puts an extreme priority on its condition.  If the greens are good a golfer will forgive or not even see other minor imperfections, if the greens are poor the facility will become highly scrutinized.  In addition to this fact, the largest amount of money and time spent will be dedicated to this single area of the golf course.

The following program is designed for the area of the golf course that receives the most concentrated traffic, the most mechanical and cultural programs, uses and requires the highest amounts of fertilizers, chemicals and labor and needs to be in the best condition all the time.  This program is also applicable for driving range and par-3 tees.

The program will be the same for all type turfs including all varieties of Bermuda and Bentgrass.  The program is specifically designed for Northern facilities that are operated and maintained 7 to 9 months a year.

Finally, the program takes into account the type of green construction and the age of the turf.  The reason these factors are taken into account is to the natural maturity of the turf, the potential for organic buildup or layering, the impact of construction techniques and issues that could develop over time with relationship to different constructions and the overall growth curve of the greens complex.

Tees

Teeing areas of a golf course are the second leading area of time spent by golfers and mechanical or cultural program stress.  Though rarely do you hear a golfer say, “That second tee was the best I’ve ever played from!” the condition and presentation is very important to the overall experience your member or guest will have.

The following program was designed for all type turfs including all varieties of Bermudas, Zoysias, Bents, Ryes, Blues, Fescues, Bahia, Floritam grasses to name a few.  The program is designed specifically for Northern facilities that are operated and maintained 7 to 9 months a year

(**To allot for increased rates for Par-3 and Driving Range tees, 25% was added to the base acres)

Fairways

The fairway is the street or highway leading our golfer through the golf course.  As we are well aware of, poorly maintained streets lead to dissatisfied guests.  A full plush fairway will increase the golfers experience by allowing them to make better contact with ball and in many cases increase spin and control leading the golfer to a more enjoyable round and a better opinion of the greens and overall quality of the facility.

The following program was designed for all type turfs including all varieties of Bermudas, Zoysias, Bents, Ryes, Blues, Fescues, Bahia, Floritam grasses to name a few.  The program is the same for both Northern and Southern facilities with the exception of the winter months.

Annual Application Schedule:

Initial Inoculation = Apply at a rate of 1 gallon per acre

(After first two months inoculation, continue program at the rate recommended in the annual program below.)

Monthly Maintenance

Apply 1/2-gallon Original Turf Pro per acre per month

Based on the above designed program (March through October), a golf course will require the following quantities of Original Turf Pro annually with the annual cost being based on $35 per gallon:

20 Acre of Fairways will require 80 gallons of product and cost $2800 a year

30 Acres of Fairways will require 120 gallons of product and cost $4200 a year

40 Acres of Fairways will require 160 gallons of product and cost $5600 a year

50 Acres of Fairways will require 200 gallons of product and cost $7000 a year

60 Acres of Fairways will require 240 gallons of product and cost $8400 a year

Roughs, Other Areas, Construction or Renovation

Areas that make up the rest of our golf courses generally receive just enough attention to get by.  Therefore, this part of the program was designed to address specific areas such as shaded tree lines, heavy cart traffic areas along cart paths or shortcuts and natural walkways to-and-from greens and tees.  These areas are addressed once in the spring, summer and fall and make up about 10 acres on average.  We apply 1 gallon of Original Turf Pro per acre three times a year.  Average cost for all clubs is $1,050 per year.

Each year the need to make improvements to a bunker, add drainage, fix a tee or completely renovate a hole requires down time that is never enough.  Apply 1 gallon of Original Turf Pro per acre after replacing the sod, sprigging or seeding and the growth or recovery time will be shortened by 25 – 50% with stronger full coverage.

Landscape

Generally, if you ask a superintendent what he dreads the most about maintaining a golf course is the need for landscape beds, flowers or the addition of trees.  The club wants to beautify the facility but we worry about the extra hand watering and whether the plants will survive.  Well, include a sound soil drench with Original Turf Pro after planting and increase the survival rate by 75% and shorten the higher water requirements for establishment.

For smaller beds or a few small trees, mix 1 gallon of Original Turf Pro in a 15 – 30 gallon sprayer and fill with water.  After planting and initial soaking of the bed or tree, remove spray wand from hose handle and freely apply a drench of the mixed solution of Original Turf Pro to the soil.  For larger areas, mix 5 gallons in a 150 – 200 gallon spray rig, remove the nozzle or handgun on the hose and freely drench bed or tree rings.

The above mentioned process can be used for bare areas on greens, collars, tees, fairways or for small sod projects and any areas needing fast immediate recovery.

Summary

So you are thinking to yourselves right now, “How much is all this going to cost?”  The following is the average program cost:

Greens: 3 Acres = $1500 (Average between both age and construction programs)

Tees: 4 Acres = $1400

Fairways: 40 Acres = $5600

Roughs and other Areas: = $1400

Total                           $8415

Now you want to know how this is going to save you money.  The savings to your budget will come in the form of savings by applying less pesticides for disease and weed eradication due to improved turf vigor and nutrient uptake, reduced fertility (With average fertility budgets being $55,000, a mere 10% reduction in fertility requirements will pay for the above program) due to more effective use of all nutrients in the soil and the fertilizers that are applied at a reduced rate (Up to a 50% reduction of fertility requirements), quicker recovery time for projects or stress related turf damage, more effective water usage due to stronger and longer root systems and finally through greater revenue due to quality, consistent conditioning ensuring high guest satisfaction and tremendous word-of-mouth promotion.  Any one of the above mentioned areas would provide enough savings to pay for the program.

Turf Pro USA is committed to our mission, which is to be the leading stewards for our environment.  With this in mind, Turf Pro USA understands that no one program can meet the needs of each and every facility.  Therefore, we encourage each user to use the above programs as a guide and discuss challenges with your Turf Pro representative for appropriate solutions.
