Paper Mill Odor Control
A paper mill located in south Georgia was receiving regular odor complaints from residents and businesses located near the mill site. This mill has an average daily waste water flow of 10 million gallons. The treatment system consists of a clarifier, then a series of four large anaerobic settling ponds. The plant operators determined that the primary odor problem was being generated by the second pond in the series. This pond is approximately 52 acres in size with an estimated volume capacity of 81 million gallons. H2S (hydorgen Sulfide) levels from this pond ran as high as 224 PPM.
Bio10 was the recommended product to reduce H2S levels and also as a secondary objective, the reduction of bottom sludge in the treatment pond. A metering point was selected along the canal connecting ponds 1 and 2.
Treatment began on June 29th with the product being metering in at a rate of 500 gallons per day (50 PPM of the daily flow rate). This daily feed rate was maintained for the first three days of treatment.
On the fourth day, the daily feed rate was reduced to 100 gallons per day (10 PPM). 1,700 gallons of Bio1 was applied over the surface area of the pond via a crop duster airplane and a high pressure hose from the banks of the pond.

The daily feed rate was reduced to 40 gallons per day on the eighth day of treatment and this daily feed rate continued through the fifteenth day of treatment.
